In our modern cath lab, an experienced and highly trained staff and cardiologists perform diagnostic and interventional procedures such as stenting to open narrowed or blocked arteries.
Cardiopulmonary Rehab
Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, or rehab for short, is a medically supervised program that aids in the recovery of cardiac and pulmonary patients by improving their physical, mental and social functioning. Patients regain their strength and confidence when they exercise under the watchful eyes of the cardiopulmonary rehab staff. The space is filled with natural light, quotes meant to inspire, and a beach scene that uplifts and encourages patients to get back into the swing of things.
Chapel
The interfaith chapel is a beautiful space for people to pray, read scripture, meditate, or just find some peace and quiet. It can be overwhelming and stressful to deal with the terminal illness of a loved one, and we encourage all visitors to spend time focusing on their mental, emotional and spiritual health. Guests may choose to use the chapel alone, with family, or to visit with our chaplain.
Joint Center Rehab Room
Within hours following their joint replacement surgery, patients are brought to the rehab room to begin their recovery. The room allows access to a hydraulic therapy mat, parallel bars, stairs, car simulator to practice getting in and out of cars and a mock-up kitchen area for practice and training.
Lobby
The main lobby provides an area for visitors to meet, check in with the staff, drop off donations, or just relax. Just off the lobby are administrative offices where families can find our chaplain, social worker, office manager and clinical manager. Public restrooms are also located in the lobby.
Main Entrance
The SECU Hospice House in Smithfield is a place of compassion, comfort and dignity where terminally ill patients and their families can spend their final time together in peace. There are 18 beds offering respite, acute, and residential care. Opened in 2010 after a $4.5 million capital campaign by the Johnston Health Foundation, this is the only hospice house in Johnston County. The beautiful, home-like setting offers comfort and convenience during this difficult time, and our volunteers and staff provide around-the-clock care so patients and families can focus on spending quality time together.
Nurses Station
The nurse’s station is centrally located, allowing our staff to provide prompt attention to each patient. A new, state-of-the- art paging system allows patients to easily call for help from their rooms, and a nurse will immediately be alerted. Once patient or family presses the call button, the phone rings at the nurse’s desk and a flashing light and sound signal sends a notification throughout the hallways.
Patient Bathroom
Every patient room has a large private bathroom. The shower has hand bars and a seat to make it easy for all patients to comfortably bathe. This also provides a private place for overnight guests to shower, and there are plenty of cabinets to store personal belongings.
Patient Room
All of our spacious rooms are private and are designed to look and feel like home. This is where patients will spend the majority of their time. We encourage them to bring photos, blankets, and other personal items to make it their own. Each room has a pull-out couch and reclining chair, providing plenty of room for visitors and overnight guests. There is also a closet for storage, and large windows to let in natural light. Rooms include an individual heating/cooling unit. Oxygen and suction equipment is also enclosed in a bedside cabinet if needed.
Patio/Memorial Gardens
Our outdoor patio and garden area offers a place to relax and get some fresh air. Families can eat a meal outside, stroll along the walking path, or just enjoy the view of flowers and listen to the calming sound of water from the fountain. Patients and visitors are invited to stroll the memorial gardens and to relax underneath a pergola. A special wall highlights the many people who have been honored or memorialized. The large grassy area is also a great place for children to run around and play.
Quiet Room
The SECU Hospice House has three hallways with patient rooms, and each hallway has a quiet room at the end. These rooms provide a private space for visitors to relax, reflect, read, or even nap.
Radiation Oncology
Johnston Health is proud to partner with UNC REX Healthcare to offer radiation oncology services and cutting-edge, comprehensive cancer care at our center in Smithfield. We use the latest technologies such as our linear accelerator to provide a broad scope of services and the highest quality of care to our patients.
Rehab Services
Johnston Health’s rehab services provides evaluations and treatments devoted to maximizing recovery and optimizing functional abilities for patients after injury, surgery, illness, long-term disability or other debilitating conditions. Our specialties include physical, aquatic, occupational and speech therapy.
Therapeutic Wound Center
The Johnston Health Therapeutic Wound Center provides patients with state-of-the-art treatment for wounds that have resisted healing despite months, or even years, of conventional treatment. Our center offers many treatment options including two hyperbaric oxygen chambers.
Veteran's Memorial
The SECU Hospice House wanted to honor those that served our county so honorably and bravely by establishing a veteran’s memorial for all branches of the military, which is on the front lawn of the hospice house.

Dining Room & Kitchen
Our full-service kitchen and dining area is available for visitors to use at any time, so families can feel at home and be near their loved one as much as possible. We offer free snacks and beverages, and there are frequent food donations by community members and local business for families to enjoy. Guests are also welcome to store their own food in the pantry and refrigerator, and to use the stove, oven and other amenities to prepare their own meals.
Library
When a patient is sleeping or not feeling up for visitors, friends and family can take advantage of the numerous books, magazines, CDs and DVDs in our library. There is also a laptop in the library for guests to use. Materials can also be taken back to patient rooms or to common areas.
Living Room & Play Room
Friends and family often spend a significant amount of time at the SECU Hospice House, which is why we provide all the convenience and necessities of a home. Our living room has couches and a TV for visitors to read, watch a movie, or play games. An office area with phone, computer and printer allows families to take care of personal or work-related needs quickly and easily, without having to leave their loved one. The adjacent play room includes toys and games so children have a place to play and unwind.
