At Johnston Health, we want to make your mammogram as comfortable as possible. That’s why we have the latest innovations in women’s health care – 3D Mammography. With this technology, you’ll experience short exam times, fast results and fewer callbacks – all resulting in less anxiety and superior care. Our imaging center offers many other procedures including CT scan, ultrasound, X-ray, bone density testing and more.
Buffalo Creek Café
Buffalo Creek Café is conveniently located on the ground floor of the hospital near the main entrance. We serve a variety of healthy meals seven days a week, and provide room service to patients in the hospital.
Cardiac Cath Lab
In our modern cath lab, an experienced and highly trained staff and cardiologists perform diagnostic and interventional procedures such as stenting to open narrowed or blocked arteries.
Cardiopulmonary Rehab
Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation, or rehab for short, is a medically supervised program that aids in the recovery of cardiac and pulmonary patients by improving their physical, mental and social functioning. Patients regain their strength and confidence when they exercise under the watchful eyes of the cardiopulmonary rehab staff. The space is filled with natural light, quotes meant to inspire, and a beach scene that uplifts and encourages patients to get back into the swing of things.
Chapel
For many patients, personal faith plays a large role in the healing process. Our Interfaith Chapel on the first floor of the hospital is available for prayer and meditation at all times to persons of all faiths. Sacred texts from various faith traditions are provided for use in the chapel. Chaplains or chaplain volunteers are also available 24/7 to visit with patients and families in their room.
Hematology Oncology
Johnston Health Hematology Oncology is the result of a unique collaboration with Duke University Medical Center to provide the latest therapies and treatments for patients with cancer and blood-related diseases. Patients receive treatment in the comfort of our spacious infusion room, with seating for friends and family and nurses close by.
Johnston Medical Mall
The Johnston Medical Mall is located across the street from Johnston Health in Smithfield and is home to a variety of outpatient practices. After operating as a textile mill for 88 years, a $15 million renovation in 2003 transformed the building into the Johnston Medical Mall.
Joint Center Rehab Room
Within hours following their joint replacement surgery, patients are brought to the rehab room to begin their recovery. The room allows access to a hydraulic therapy mat, parallel bars, stairs, car simulator to practice getting in and out of cars and a mock-up kitchen area for practice and training.
Main Entrance
Founded in 1951 as Johnston Memorial Hospital, Johnston Health in Smithfield is licensed for 179 medical/surgical beds and 20 behavioral health beds. In 2009, the hospital was expanded and renovated with the completion of a $62 million five-story patient tower that includes 101 patient suites, a larger cafeteria, modern operating rooms and a new intensive care unit. The hospital is accredited by the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations.
Main Lobby
Patients and visitors may check in with our friendly volunteers or registration staff upon entering the hospital. From the lobby, visitors may easily access public restrooms, an ATM, the volunteer gift shop, elevators to patient rooms, and the cafeteria.
Operating Room
At Johnston Health, we are committed to providing the latest and best equipment for surgery, including a da Vinci Surgical Robot System. This state-of-the-art technology provides a minimally-invasive alternative to open surgery and laparoscopy for complex procedures, causing less pain, reducing infection risk, and providing better clinical outcomes.
Patient Room
A new patient tower built in 2009 offers 101 private suites for inpatients. These modern rooms offer a private bathroom, plenty of space for visitors and a futon for overnight guests.
Radiation Oncology
Johnston Health is proud to partner with UNC REX Healthcare to offer radiation oncology services and cutting-edge, comprehensive cancer care at our center in Smithfield. We use the latest technologies such as our linear accelerator to provide a broad scope of services and the highest quality of care to our patients.
Rehab Services
Johnston Health’s rehab services provides evaluations and treatments devoted to maximizing recovery and optimizing functional abilities for patients after injury, surgery, illness, long-term disability or other debilitating conditions. Our specialties include physical, aquatic, occupational and speech therapy.
Therapeutic Wound Center
The Johnston Health Therapeutic Wound Center provides patients with state-of-the-art treatment for wounds that have resisted healing despite months, or even years, of conventional treatment. Our center offers many treatment options including two hyperbaric oxygen chambers.
Women’s Pavilion Lobby
The Women’s Pavilion at our hospital in Smithfield is designed to provide care and comfort to women and their families as they experience the birth of their child. For your convenience, there is a separate driveway and entrance with wheelchair accessible ramp just outside the lobby doors. Our waiting area has plenty of comfortable seating with a direct view into the nursery, and visitors have easy access to snacks and meals with vending machines just outside the doors and the hospital cafeteria down the hall.

Women’s Pavilion Labor and Delivery Room
The Women’s Pavilion has five labor and delivery suites, each with a private bathroom and shower. These spacious rooms provide plenty of space and seating for your support team to stay with you during the birth process.
Women’s Pavilion Postpartum Room
After giving birth, you will be moved to one of our 16 postpartum rooms. Each room has a private bathroom and shower, and seating for your visitors. You can have meals delivered right to your room, and our lactation consultant is available to help you with successful breastfeeding.
